Galaxy Digital Launches $5 Million Grant Program for Quantum-Resistant Bitcoin
AI Summary
Galaxy Digital is investing $5 million to accelerate the development of quantum-resistant security protocols for the Bitcoin network.
Galaxy Digital, led by Mike Novogratz, has officially launched a dedicated Bitcoin quantum computing initiative. The program includes up to $5 million in grant funding for developers focusing on post-quantum cryptography (PQC) solutions specifically for the Bitcoin network. As quantum computing technology advances, the elliptic curve cryptography currently securing Bitcoin's peer-to-peer network is increasingly viewed as a long-term vulnerability.
The initiative also includes a research and publishing program through Galaxy Research and the formation of a Quantum Advisory Council. This council will consist of leading experts in quantum computing and cryptography to guide the transition. Alex Thorn, Galaxy's head of firmwide research, noted that there is currently a significant gap between the rapidly moving quantum computing sector and the Bitcoin development world, which is only beginning to engage with PQC in earnest.
While cryptographically relevant quantum computers do not yet exist, Galaxy suggests that the timeline for such machines is compressing. This move follows similar efforts by other industry leaders like Coinbase, which formed a quantum advisory council earlier this year. The goal is to ensure decentralized governance structures can test and deploy security upgrades before quantum threats become practical.
