IonQ Completes $1.8 Billion Acquisition of SkyWater Technology to Become First Vertically Integrated Quantum Platform

By GlobeNewswireJuly 31, 2026

AI Summary

IonQ has become a vertically integrated quantum powerhouse by completing its $1.8 billion acquisition of the U.S. semiconductor foundry SkyWater Technology.

IonQ (NYSE: IONQ) announced today the completion of its $1.8 billion acquisition of SkyWater Technology (NASDAQ: SKYT), the largest exclusively U.S.-based semiconductor foundry. The deal, which received final regulatory approval earlier this week, marks a significant shift in the quantum industry toward vertical integration and domestic supply chain security. By owning its own fabrication facilities, IonQ aims to eliminate its reliance on third-party and foreign chip suppliers for its next-generation quantum processing units (QPUs).

Niccolo de Masi, Chairman and CEO of IonQ, stated that the acquisition "crystalizes IonQ's vision to serve as a technology leader, merchant supplier, and ecosystem enabler." The move gives IonQ direct control over the entire hardware stack, from chip design and fabrication to advanced packaging and system deployment. SkyWater will continue to operate as a wholly owned subsidiary, maintaining its existing customer base while prioritizing IonQ's quantum roadmap.

The Bloomington-based SkyWater facility had already been earmarked for up to $16 million in CHIPS Act funding to modernize its cleanroom and IT infrastructure. This acquisition is expected to accelerate the production of IonQ’s "Tempo" system and future architectures. Industry analysts suggest this move puts pressure on rivals who still depend on international partners for specialized semiconductor manufacturing, particularly as quantum technology becomes a focus of national security policy.
